In-Season at the Santa Monica Farmers Market

At the market this week I found mulberries. Never in the Northwest, land of berries, had I ever seen this berry. My only knowledge of this fruit came from that classic children’s song that says, “all around the mulberry bush…”. Not a fat, juicy berry like the raspberry or blackberry. Rather small and delicate. First I saw the small russian mulberry and later a larger relative(name unknown by vendor). At $5 a basket, I opted for the picture instead.

Also new to the market for the year is green garbanzo. Flora Bella grows them, and will have them for the next couple months. They are tasty fresh out of the pod, similar to a pea pod. He sells them by the bunch, still attached to the branch, for $16. It is a little of an investment so I have yet to get more than a sample.
