Hunger Action Day Today! May 20, 4 pm

Hunger Action LA is leading a coalition of groups in Los Angeles to support policies and budgets at all levels of government that will end hunger.  Every year for the past 11 years we have organized a Hunger Action Day when hundreds of low income people, service providers and others concerned with hunger issues gather for a day of legislative visits and a rally to call for policies then ensure everyone has enough to eat and access to healthy food.

On Wednesday May 20 at 4 pm hundreds of us will converge on the lawn at City Hall for a march to the State Building . Our key demands will be:

  1. A city/county initiative to salvage tons of food that would be thrown away, to use in programs to feed the needy. At a time when record numbers of people are losing their homes, unemployment is rising and a growing number of families are in need, California caterers, hotels and restaurants throw out roughly 1.5 million tons of perfectly good food every year according to the state Integrated Waste Management Board.  This food should be directed instead to hunger relief programs already in place to serve the most vulnerable members of our community!

  1. Cutting red tape in the food stamp program to serve thousands of newly unemployed workers. State legislation passed last year provide for the elimination of certain barriers to receiving government food stamps but Los Angeles County has until January to implement the new law.  Hungry people cannot wait until January.  We urge the new law to be implemented immediately so struggling families will have the food they are entitled to now!

  1. Supermarkets with clean, fresh, affordable food for our inner city areas. Many areas of our city completely lack a neighborhood source of fresh fruits, vegetables and meats.  These “food deserts” force their residents toward fast food chains which is leading to a dramatic increase in obesity and other health issues.  We need policies that encourage markets to provide greater service to all areas of the city!

In addition to this local rally, another group from Hunger Action LA will be in Sacramento pressing for improvements in food stamps and child nutrition programs and a fair state budget that doesn’t slash benefits to families, seniors and disabled.  We urge you to join us for one of these two actions!
