“A new crop of school gardens” story in the LA Times

I love to see that school gardens are in the news more and more these days.  It seems people are starting to understand their importance, in these times when kids are so separate from nature and knowing where their food comes from.  It is quite inspiring!

It’s funny because today I spend much of the day getting our school garden in shape. I will be leaving at the end of the week, and be away for a month.  The watering system we had set up(thank you Andy Kumpula!) broke while I was out of town, so I had to replace some hoses.  Some plants had unfortunately died, but I planted some new ones in their place.  My kids and I also put down some plastic sheeting and sand, over the shaded area under the tree, where the weeds thrive.  No more weeding there.  When we return for school in the fall, we plan to turn that area into a Zen garden.

So, without further ado, here is the link to the article in today’s LA Times, entitled “A new crop of school gardens”.
