Making applesauce with kids

At our school, once a month, each classroom gets a box of a seasonal fruit or vegetable.  This month: apples!

We talked about what region apples grow best in, what the number one apple producing state is (Washington!!), and why.  Then we got to cooking.  I peeled the apples, while they washed their hands.  Then they cut the apples up and poured them into the pot.  Adding a little water, we cooked them, covered for about 20 minutes.

The end result was wonderful, both in taste and response.  The kids really got into being responsible enough to use a knife and gobbled up the product of their hard work.

I love that I can help out in this way at our school.  We have so much fun together!
