Developing your child’s taste buds: Apple taste test

image

Inspired by a Cookus Interruptus’ post about setting up taste tests for kids, my kids and I decided to try one of our own.  We had just recently taken a trip up to a local apple orchard for some U-pick, and had some California Spartan apples on hand.  Liking to have a variety of fruit in the house, I had also picked up a bag of Trader Joe’s Organic Gala apples, from Washington.

I cut up the two varieties of apples and lay them on a platter and explained to the kids my intention.  They were excited, ready for our food experiment.

Here are their results:

Washington Gala apples were the clear favorite!  They were sweeter, more colorful(creamy colored inside), and deeper in flavor.  After I explained that these apples were grown near where we camp every summer at Lake Chelan, my son stated he could taste the summer heat, water, and beautiful Washington surroundings.

The California Spartans were similar in texture, but a bit more bland.  The interior was almost white/green with a slight crispness.  Still a delicious apples, especially since we picked them ourselves, but clearly second to the WA Gala.
