Harvest of the Month: Asparagus

Our Harvest of the Month for April is asparagus.  Local farmers provide seasonal produce to our schools through the Network for a Healthy California program.  How lucky we are!  Free box of produce! to teach our children about healthy foods through hands-on learning/tasting.

We cleaned, trimmed, and sliced the asparagus at a diagonal.  I like the way it looks compared to a straight cut.  It is said,”we eat with our eyes, then our mouths”.

One of my students givin’ the asparagus a try.

After sauteing until tender, we added a knob of butter and a squeeze of lemon.  It smelled amazing!

They couldn’t wait to get a sample! For one of these girls, it was her first time eating asparagus.  After her first taste, she begin chasing the other students around, asking for their leftovers.  “You gonna eat that??”

Mmmmm! asparagus!
